Opening Keynote on ‘Science (Communication) and Wikipedia: Potentials and Pitfalls’

Recently I had the honor of providing the opening keynote to the conference “Enhancing the voice of science on Wikipedia: How universities can collaborate with the online encyclopedia in science communication”, taking place from April 9–11, 2024, at University of Innsbruck.

I seized the opportunity to reflect on the following questions:

  • How ‘scientific’ is Wikipedia?
  • How important is science for Wikipedia?
  • How important is Wikipedia for science?
  • How important is Wikipedia for our common knowledge?
  • What are potentials when science communication meets Wikipedia?
  • What are the pitfalls?
  • Is it worth it?

Innsbruck goes Boston – the Academy of Management 2023 experience in a nutshell

The 83rd annual meeting of the Academy of Management took place in Boston this year. Under the theme “Putting the Worker Front and Center”, more than 10.000 scholars and practitioners joined the conference’s professional development workshops (PDW), paper sessions, symposia, keynotes, and very importantly, its socials. Leonhard Dobusch and Milena Leybold were two of these attendees, who, among other scholars representing the University of Innsbruck, had the pleasure of enjoying a great program and Boston as a fantastic conference site. In this blog entry, they share some of their highlights. As Leonhard is this year’s chair of the Strategy-as-Practice (SAP) Interest Group (IG) and Milena part of the Social Media Committee of the Interest Group, they were both actively engaged in events organized by and for the IG.

Coffee – PuB – Peers and Beverages: Academic Writing as an Early Career Scholar

Join us for an open conversation on academic writing, its beauty and challenges, and the pressure of “you should be writing” as early career scholars over a coffee on March 14th!

Academic writing can be a fulfilling but also challenging and overwhelming experience for early career scholars. On March 14th from 13.00 to 14.30, please join us for an honest exchange on our struggles and great moments in writing. Daniela Rothe (Writing Center, University of Innsbruck) will talk about the practice of journalling in academia, the tinkering between the scientific object itself and writing, and the re-(production) of gender stereotypes in scientific writing. Monica, Milena, and Ellen (early career researchers at the University of Innsbruck & Leuphana University Lüneburg) will share their writing experiences based on a collective letter diary they wrote to each other over a couple of months to reflect on their writing practices.

We would love to hear about your experiences, too, and together question and discuss the norms and ways of academic writing.

Key Information

  • When? Tuesday, March 14, 2023 –  1 – 2.30 pm
  • Where?  Marketing Spitz (SOWI, 3rd floor, East)

Guest Lecture at the DiSCourse Seminar: “Openness as Organizing Principle: Dilemmas across Domains” [Updates]

The Digital Science Center (DiSC) at the University of Innsbruck invited me to give a talk in their lecture series “DiSCourse Seminar” on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at 13:15. Please check out the abstract of my talk on “Openness as Organizing Principle: Dilemmas across Domains”:

‘Openness’ has become an organizational leitmotif of our time, spreading across a growing set of organizational domains. However, most discussions within these specialized domains (e.g. open data, open innovation or open strategy) pursue openness as a program, focusing on challenges specific to the particularities of those domains. Conceptualizing openness as a dynamic organizing principle along dimensions of transparency/opacity and inclusion/exclusion allows theorizing and potentially addressing dilemmas associated with programmatic approaches to openness across these various domains.

Participants are invited to join the event at the Digital Science Center, Innrain 15, Open Space Area (1st floor) or online via Big Blue Button.
